Summary of Duties:

Washington State University announces a Climate Hub Fellow for Alaska to work with the USDA Northwest Climate Hub and its co-lead at the USDA-ARS Northwest Sustainable Agroecosystems Research Unit. The mission of the USDA Climate Hubs is to develop and deliver science-based, region-specific information and technologies to agricultural and natural resource managers, and communities, that enable climate-smart decision making, and to help implement those decisions. The Climate Hubs achieve their mission through three work areas: conducting science and syntheses of the best available science, developing and curating tools with end-users, and outreach and training to enhance climate literacy and reduce barriers to climate adaptation and mitigation. The focus of this Climate Hub Fellow will be to develop a current state of knowledge focused on soil management for the variety of cropping systems in Alaska, as well as to organize a convening of producers, technology transfers specialists, and scientists to develop a summary of long-term research needs for agriculture in Alaska in a changing climate.

Summary of position's responsibilities
  • Develop a current state of knowledge on how to improve soil health for a variety of terrestrial crops grown in Alaska (i.e., grain, peonies, hay, vegetables, berries, and specialty crops grown in hoop houses) via peer reviewed manuscript(s), technical guides, and other outreach materials.
  • Develop a technical summary of soil amendment rates, recipes, biochar, fish waste, etc. via technical guides and fact sheets.
  • Plan and organize a convening of producers, producer associations, technology transfer specialists, and scientists to develop a summary of research needs for agriculture in Alaska in a changing climate.
  • Engage with producers, Natural Resources Conservation Service, University of Alaska-Fairbanks Cooperative Extension, and Northwest Climate Hub to develop outreach materials.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree or doctoral degree in agronomy, soil science or related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in agronomy, soil management, outreach to technology transfer specialists and producers, great communication skills with producers and scientists.
  • Experience in planning an event focused on engaging with producers and scientists to identify needs (i.e., meeting, conference, workshop, webinar series, co-produced research).

Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
