The Longfellow Bar at Alden & Harlow, is a neighborhood bar and restaurant located in the historic Café Algiers space directly above his flagship restaurant at 40 Brattle Street in Harvard Square. The two-story space is named after famed architect Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow, who along with his business partners Frank Alden and Alfred Harlow created Brattle Hall in 1889.
The food and drinks at The Longfellow Bar continue to explore Chef Scelfo’s forward-thinking approach to experiencing a meal around his kitchen counter. The menu features bar food that is intended to be passed and shared, allowing guests the opportunity to become immersed in a relaxed and tactile approach to eating.
The Bar program at Longfellow Bar is a focal point of the guest experience. Bartenders are empowered to grow their skill set, expertise and evolve professionally with the restaurant. Bartenders are expected to be punctual, professional and mature.
This position touches all aspects of modern hospitality, both culturally and technically. We are here to create memorable experiences and repeat guests. Everything we do should be for that shared end goal.
Essential Responsibilities
- Lead by example to generate a positive, productive work environment for all staff
- Work with with passion, integrity, and knowledge
- Manage time effectively and execute all job responsibilities
- Deliver superior service and maximize customer satisfaction
- Champion all restaurant concept elements, including culinary direction, beverage program and signature hospitality
- Share knowledge with staff through daily briefings and continued education
- Complete all steps of service, extending to all areas of the restaurant
- Demonstrate proficiency in all front of house areas to assist with all service operations
- Follow inventory control procedures to reduce product loss
- Maintain cleanliness and organization and complete daily operational checklist
Education & Experience Required:
- Proven work experience as a bartender or server
- Proven customer service experience
- Food and beverage (F&B) knowledge, with ability to remember and recall ingredients and dishes to inform customers and service staff
- Must be comfortable standing/walking for 8 hours, and be able to bend, push, pull and/or lift 30 lbs
