Job Description
SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Fire Marshal, this position promotes fire safety through actively participating in fire prevention tasks and duties as conducive to the success of the Fire Marshals’ office or as assigned by the Fire Marshal. The primary purpose of this position is the prevention of fires within the City of Amarillo through proactive fire inspections, fire investigation, public education, and information regarding fire safety. Responsibilities also include establishing and maintaining good relations with the citizens of Amarillo, other City departments, civic groups, government agencies, private entities and media representatives and conducting and performing fire investigations and fire inspections.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs fire safety inspections and enforcement of the fire code and all other applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Performs fire and arson investigations, pursuing criminal investigations to completion.
  • Manages evidence throughout pending criminal cases.
  • Performs review of construction plans and permit applications as required by the fire code.
  • Performs and participates in fire safety educational programs.
  • Pursues and maintains good relations with citizens of Amarillo, other City departments, civic groups, government agencies, private entities and media representatives.
  • Specializes training in several disciplines specific to Fire investigations, fire inspections and code enforcement, Texas criminal law, Texas civil law, evidence handling, firearms.
  • Maintains all required certifications and licenses.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the Fire Marshal.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Knowledge of inspection and code enforcement, working with International Fire Code and International Building Code, fire cause determinations and arson investigations is required.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of fire science.
  • Knowledge of fire prevention laws, ordinances and codes.
  • Ability to operate computers for data entry and word processing.
  • Ability to operate highly technical computer applications, such as GIS or CAD.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skill.
  • Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • The employee works in a dynamic environment that requires being sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
  • This position is considered weather essential personnel.



Licenses/Certification
Must be a State of Texas licensed Peace Officer. Must also be a certified Fire Inspector and Fire/Arson Investigator or must meet the qualifications to be able to obtain such license/certifications within six (6) months of hire date. Additional training in criminal investigations, interrogations, evidence handling and management, preferred.

Required Qualifications
Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent and a minimum of two years of experience in Law Enforcement is required. Must be a State of Texas licensed Peace Officer, with a minimum of two (2) years of experience in a specialist field in investigations. Must also be a certified Fire Inspector and Fire/Arson Investigator or must meet the qualifications to be able to obtain such license/certifications. Within six (6) months of hire date.


Preferred Qualifications
Additional training in criminal investigations, interrogations, evidence handling and management, preferred.
