POWER SCHOLARS ACADEMY™ PROGRAM

Power Scholars Academy (PSA) is a 5-week summer learning program run in partnership with the West Cook YMCA, School District 90, and BellXcel. The program is designed to provide academic, social emotional learning, and enrichment supports for 1st through 4thgrade scholars. Scholars are identified and invited based on the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support process (MTSS) as Tier 2.

POSITION SUMMARY

Enrichment Teachers role is to actively engage youth in enrichment programming, such as art, STEM, physical activity and more. Responsible to create an environment where scholars will be able to build confidence, try new activities, and build positive relationships. This role will be responsible for developing and implementing enrichment classes, support Assistant Teachers, and scholar supervision during guest speakers, field trips and events.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Developing and implementing appropriate enrichment classes for assigned grade levels.

2. Preparing classrooms for daily activities and collaborating with academic teachers and teacher’s assistants to ensure that objectives are reached.

3. Maintaining an organized and efficient classroom, as well as keep all classroom records.

4. Adhering to all PSA and district professional expectations and compliance expectations.

5. Creating a positive, achievement-oriented, organized and engaging learning environment.

6. Motivating and holding scholars to high academic and behavioral expectations.

7. Providing consistent rewards and/or consequences for scholar behavior grounded in positive discipline.

8. Empowering scholars to make positive choices and serving as a role model.

9. Being accountable for meeting scholars’ individual academic and instructional needs.

10. Ensuring enrichment goals are met for each scholar.

11. Creating and directing project-based learning.

12. Mentoring and supporting the professional development of the teacher’s assistants.

13. Supervising scholars during guest speaker engagements, field trips, lunch and recess.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND REQUISITES

· Bachelor’s degree is required, education or youth development field preferred.

· A minimum of two years prior experience working with children between the ages of 5 and 13 years of age required.

· Outstanding verbal, written, and technological (computer/internet) skills.

· Ability to build relationships and influence scholars, staff, community members & families.

· Exceptional group management, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.

· Ability to build relationships and influence students.

· Committed to the goals of the program and approach.

· Belief and commitment to the Y’s mission and values.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time

2. Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids

3. Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time

4. Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking

5. Must be able to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.

6. Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate

7. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency

COMPENSATION

· $25 per hour

· Monday through Thursday 11:30 am to 3:30 pm; Friday 8:00 am to 3:30 pm

· Additional hours as needed for team meetings, lesson plans, and extended care coverage

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $25.00 per hour
