Position Details

Job Summary

The High School Principal will establish a culture of learning where all students are engaged. The building leader will work collaboratively with district administrators and building staff to create a positive, open, enthusiastic, and well-organized teaching and learning environment that supports aligned and comprehensive college and career preparation programs.

The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include the following:

  • Support the vision, focus, and strategies to lead the educational direction of the building.
  • Embrace change and innovation and is able to envision and actualize learning beyond the traditional walls of the classroom and the building.
  • Oversee and direct the School Improvement Process.
  • Support and lead district wide focus on MTSS and Differentiated Instruction
  • Model and articulate high expectations for all students and staff.
  • Foster positive staff and student relationships.
  • Commit to high visibility by demonstrating a consistent presence in the community.
  • Maintain a solid working knowledge of current educational research.
  • Provide leadership for the planning, development, and implementation of the curriculum.
  • Develop creative scheduling practices to support innovation and the academic vision for all students.
  • Actively communicates and meets with students, staff, parents, and colleagues about the educational direction and goal accomplishments of the students.
  • Manage all components of the school including student behavior and attendance; student engagement, curriculum development, instructional practices, and assessment; student learning opportunities; and student activities.
  • Analyze and share student data and educational research.
  • Lead the school community in data-driven decisions based on state standards and results from multiple data points including, but not limited to, SAT, iReady, school-based assessments, attendance, and discipline.
  • Support teacher goals of increasing student engagement and improving student achievement.
  • Monitoring of teaching practices to ensure rigor and best practice is occurring in each classroom.
  • Understand the complexities and value of hiring, evaluating, inspiring, and mentoring all staff members to exceed expectations.
  • Promote the professional growth of all staff through continuous feedback and evaluation.
  • Monitor and evaluate certified and non-certified professional staff.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate student systems, such as recognition, interventions, attendance, and behavior management.
  • Evaluate the performance and effectiveness of programs and staff.
  • Promote the maintenance of safe, clean, and attractive classrooms to create an atmosphere conducive to growth and learning.
  • Support and maintain the building’s ongoing safety and security plans.
  • Support the climate of order and respect for all members of the program community.
  • Supervise the preparation of reports, records, lists and all other paperwork required or necessary for the District.
  • Lead the building’s efforts to continue building trusting relationships and partnerships with parents and community members.
  • Support the school board’s strategic planning process.
  • Facilitates linkage with parents, business/industry, postsecondary institutions, and community organizations to support students’ transition to postsecondary education and employment.
  • Attend and participate in building, district, county, and state meetings that contribute to overall student success.
  • Maintain positive public relations with parents, parent groups, school volunteers, and outside agencies.
  • Engage in collaborative efforts with the Curriculum Department and District Administration in an active and contributing role in District initiatives.
  • Organize and facilitate meaningful and engaging building level professional development.
  • Work with the Director of Special Services to ensure appropriate programming for students receiving special education services.
  • Ensure compliance with all certification requirements for staff, support board policy requirements, and participate in personnel matter investigations with the Human Resources office.
  • Establish priorities for educational resources and programs to meet the needs of students and staff and prepare the school budget in collaboration with the Business Office.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent.

Education and Qualifications

Qualified candidates for the position of High School Principal

  • Hold a Master’s degree or higher in Educational Leadership/School Administration
  • Possess a current:
  • Michigan Administrative Certification
  • Michigan Teaching Certificate
  • Successful experience in administration, leadership, and supervision
  • At least five years of successful experience as a secondary classroom teacher
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize variety of leadership styles
  • Possess exceptional verbal and written communication as well as interpersonal skills
  • Competency in the use of technology and experience with Google Suite
  • Experience in using Student Management Database systems
  • Demonstrated ability as an instructional leader; experience with leading teachers
  • Solid understanding of best practices for instructional strategies
  • Evidence of strong sense of honesty and integrity
  • Possess strong organizational skills including the ability to be detail oriented.
  • Commitment to professional growth of self and staff
  • Promote effective relationships with all stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and execute the full range of tasks to operate a comprehensive high school
  • Ability and willingness to collaborate

This position is affiliated with Holly Area Schools Administrative Association (HASAA).

The Principal reports directly to the Superintendent.
