By joining our Structures Section as a Highway Technician Assistant II, you’ll perform basic level work and assists with intermediate level work in roadway or roadside maintenance operations for Grant County Structures section.

By joining our Structures Section as a Highway Technician Assistant II, you’ll perform basic level work and assists with intermediate level work in roadway or roadside maintenance operations for Grant County Structures section.
Holders of this Job Title will complete tasks such as:
- Drive truck hauling materials to and from job sites.
- Operates dump truck with snow plow and salt spreader working snow and ice.
- Learn to operate intermediate level equipment such as but not limited to, backhoes, concrete mixers, front end loaders, skidsteers with attachments, etc.
- Assist with bridge deck patching, bridge joint sealing, and carpentry work.
- Assist with basic surveying activities for roadway location and construction surveying, read engineer plans and specifications.
- Flag for operations requiring traffic control.
- Gains knowledge and understanding as a quality assurance inspector.
- Learns to operate intermediate equipment.
- Learns basic surveying. Reads plans for repairs of roadways and bridges.
- Learns the best practices of Asphalt Paving, laying pipe, earthwork, and guardrail installation.
- Class A with CDL license with Tanker Endorsements
- Mechanical knowledge and manual dexterity and coordination.
- Traffic Control & Flagging
- Snow and Ice Plowing skills.
- Work well with people.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have two years of construction or highway maintenance experience.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, geology, earth science, industrial drafting, design technology, construction technology, or a related field will substitute for two (2) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. College coursework related to any of these fields will substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a Class B commercial driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification. The employee must successfully complete the KYTC Highway Technician Academy Level 1 or equivalent within one year of employment in this job classification.

Working Conditions
Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
