Position Focus:

The position supports the operations of the research laboratories of the Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (IPCH), the Shared Conservation Laboratory and the Digitization Laboratory. Research focuses on the materiality of museum and library collections, their degradation and treatment. The shared laboratories provide infrastructure and equipment to Yale’s collections and researchers pursuing the conservation treatment, examination, and documentation of objects.
1. Creates, documents, and maintains organizational systems in coordination with lab users; provides orientation to the lab environment; ensures communication of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) rules and processes. Facilitates moveable equipment inventory (MEI), coordinates storage cabinet barcoding to track collection object locations.
2. Maintains and updates the inventory of chemicals and conservation supplies, places orders for lab supplies and equipment.
3. Facilitates lab inspections and safety systems testing; maintains Material Safety Data Sheet files; arranges hazardous waste pickup; assists in tracking training, lab protocols, and equipment registration.
4. Inspects spaces for physical plant or safety issues, alerts appropriate personnel; monitors lab climate with loggers; arranges access for building maintenance and repair; submits and tracks Facilities Work Order requests; interfaces with pest management vendor to address issues in lab spaces; attends Integrated Pest Management group meetings.
5. Prepares and analyzes reference materials, calibration standards, and laboratory samples used in research. May assist in the analysis of objects from Yale’s collections.
6. Creates and maintains databases for resource libraries, samples, and reference sets. Consults with users to ensure accurate descriptions and identification.
7. Assists with scheduling of shared spaces and lab resources. Coordinates space access with Security. Assists in planning and escorting of visits to the laboratories. Maintains shared calendars, updates users about events and programs.
8. Facilitates the diagnosis, repair, and calibration of specialized laboratory and imaging equipment. Assists with their relocation, including to other Yale locations/buildings. Updates software on shared computers.
9. Arranges shipping and delivery of equipment and materials.
10. Coordinates relocation of collection objects with users as needed and for emergency preparations.
11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties

1. Performs equipment maintenance and repair. Modifies and adjusts equipment and apparatus according to experiment and specifications. 2. Creates instructional materials. Oversees and instructs support staff and students in laboratory techniques and equipment usage. 3. Performs specialized scientific/laboratory procedures and techniques. Formulates scientific solutions and media. 4. Maintains laboratory facilities and work areas. Orders supplies, equipment, and apparatus for laboratory experiments. 5. Performs additional functions incidental to laboratory activities.

Required Education and Experience

Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated ability to handle multiple assignments and work independently and productively, exercise initiative and judgment in resolving and referring problems, organize varied tasks, set priorities, and adapt to change. Excellent attention to detail, accuracy.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills for working in a dynamic multi-user environment.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Proven ability working in a laboratory setting and handling of and proper disposal of hazardous materials. Demonstrated ability with routine laboratory work.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Fluency with Microsoft Office suite components: Word, Excel, PowerPoint; fluency with online collaboration tools (e.g., Teams, Zoom, Google Drive, Slack).

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to record, examine, analyze, and compile data from measurements or experiments. Fine motor skills needed to allow manipulation of small samples using scalpels and/or needles while viewing through a stereomicroscope.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Demonstrated ability with operating analytical instrumentation including software that controls instrumentation. Experience conducting online literature search, knowledge of Google Scholar and other citation index websites. Experience working with database software.

Physical Requirements

Requires the physical strength to lift and carry up to 35 pounds for short distances and the ability to move a compressed gas cylinder (approx. 160 lbs.) with the aid of a cylinder truck.
