Museum Curator Job at City of San Leandro, CA
The Position
Effective January 1, 2023, the hourly rate range for this position will increase to $37.41 - $45.48.
The San Leandro Public Library system is comprised of the main library, three (3) branch libraries and the San Leandro Museum. The City is seeking to hire a part-time Museum Curator who will be positive, enthusiastic, creative and self-motivated with a passion for serving a community rich in diversity. In accordance with CalPERS rules, this part-time position may not exceed a maximum of 999 hours per fiscal year.
Definition
Performs professional museum work; oversees and maintains exhibits and education programs on San Leandro’s cultural, architectural, and natural history; manages the museum collection through acquisition, archival storage, and record keeping; maintains files related to historic preservation; acts as liaison with related community organizations regarding museum activities; and performs other related work as necessary.
Supervision Exercised and Received:
Oversees the work of para-professionals and volunteers and provides input regarding work schedules; work activities and training. Receives general direction from the Library Director or assigned management and supervisory staff.
Duties and Responsibilities

The typical job functions of the classification may include, but are not limited to, the functions below and are subject to changes in operational necessity:
- Manages the day-to-day operation of the San Leandro History Museum and Casa Peralta, including overseeing the facility, monitoring museum operations and budget, and interacting with the public.
- Cares for, manages, accessions, catalogs, and documents museum collections in accordance with established procedures; protects collections and artifacts with proper archival materials for storage and preservation; researches and identifies appropriate acquisition and purchase of artifacts and materials.
- Plans, develops, coordinates, and implements various museum activities such as lectures, walking tours, films, and related public programs.
- Maintains special displays and interpretive exhibits at the San Leandro History Museum; collaborates with Library staff on programs and exhibits at Library locations and History Room.
- Develops and oversees tours and activities, for third and fourth-grade students, which supports local history curriculum in partnership with local schools;

Qualifications
Experience and Education Guidelines:
Any combination equivalent to experience and
education that would most likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would
be
qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in the field of museum studies, history, American studies, anthropology, library sciences or related field. A Master of Arts in Museum Studies is desirable.
Experience: One year of experience working in a museum, or library, school or community services program dealing with collections management, exhibition development, and/or public programming.
Licenses /certifications/other requirements: Must be willing to work such hours as are necessary to accomplish the job requirements; travel to attend meetings; seminars and conferences. Classification requires the possession and continued maintenance of a valid class "C" California driver's license if operating a motor vehicle is necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
