Boulder County Parks and Open Space (BCPOS) department is seeking to hire a Planner II. The emphasis of this position will be on Human Dimensions at the intersection with natural resource conservation. Initially, this position will serve in a support role within the Planning team of the Resource Planning Division with opportunity to advance into primary roles over time. Planning team members perform a variety of complex, specialized professional planning duties related to land conservation and community engagement. The Planner II will weave together data, community voices, and staff expertise to guide planning processes resulting in site management plans, management policies, and other outcomes. Their work will serve the department’s mission to conserve natural, cultural, and agricultural resources and provide public uses that reflect sound resource management and community values. The Planner II will also work independently on projects and processes that meet current and emerging planning needs in the department.

The Parks & Open Space Department is responsible for caring for more than 100,000 acres of land and 120 miles of trail in Boulder County. Planning staff often lead multi-disciplinary teams including specialists in ecology, wildlife, agriculture, recreation, cultural resources, water, education & outreach, resource protection, real estate, facilities, GIS, and administration in planning for the management of this land. Candidates with knowledge and experience in the areas of Public Planning, Human Dimensions, and Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) are encouraged to apply.

This is a full-time, benefited position. This position will work a flexible schedule Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm with occasional meetings on evenings and weekends. This position will work out of the BCPOS Headquarters located at 5201 St. Vrain Rd., Longmont, Colorado, with potential for a hybrid arrangement. Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines, this position is exempt.

Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.

Hiring Salary Range: $67,944.00 - $97,848.00 Annually

Tentative Hiring Timeline:


  • Phone Screening: week of April 24th
  • First Round Interviews: May 4th
  • Second Round Interviews: week of May 15th
  • Reference Check: week of May 15th

Examples of Duties

  • Support and administer planning processes resulting in documents and other outcomes that describe and detail the department’s current and planned stewardship activities
  • Engage the public in innovative ways to obtain diverse community feedback on the department’s projects and programs
  • Research, analyze, and communicate best practices in Human Dimensions to inform management decisions
  • Coordinate and manage interdisciplinary teams, as well as outside consultants, in a variety of planning projects
  • Serve as the department’s representative in processes with other governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations for issues related to land conservation and human use of public lands
  • Prepare and present staff recommendations, reports, and plans to a variety of Boulder County boards and commissions, including the Board of County Commissioners and the Parks and Open Space Advisory Committee
  • Review and interpret a wide range of documents associated with planning processes and projects including engineered drawings, survey results, literature reviews, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • May be reassigned in an emergency situation

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Planning, Human Dimensions, Recreation Management, Natural Resources, Landscape Architecture, or related field; AND Two years of professional experience in environmental, parks, community planning, or other related fields.

DRIVER'S LICENSE:

  • Applicants must have a valid driver's license

  • Master’s degree in relevant field
  • Experience with InDesign, Microsoft Publisher or equivalent
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of and skill in land management activities and planning processes common to public land management agencies.
  • Learning mindset and willingness to innovate.
  • Knowledge of the field of Human Dimensions and ability to apply it to planning for public lands.
  • Ability to work independently, problem-solve, and work on a variety of projects with overlapping schedules.
  • Skill at engaging a variety of stakeholders and the public in projects and processes by effectively listening, summarizing comments and input, and making thoughtful responses.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, prepare, edit, summarize, and present many different types of documents, maps, and charts—including technical reports and engineered plans. Excellent communication skills-both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work effectively with other employees, agencies, and the public.
  • Skill at engaging teams of staff and associated personnel in a variety of planning processes including the ability to resolve conflicts in groups and facilitate constructive outcomes.
  • Skill at utilizing standard professional, office software programs such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), and ArcGIS.
