Nature of Position
This is a part-time position with limited benefits.
The Police Assistant I performs a variety of non-sworn police work and other related work as required and may be assigned to an activity or may rotate to a variety of assignments to meet departmental needs. Assignments may include: traffic and vehicle control, including investigation of reports of abandoned vehicles, taking appropriate action, and enforcing parking regulations; crowd control and crime scene protection; response to non-hazardous animal control incidents; handle public inquiries and related work at the front desk.
Examples of Duties
- Prepare routine incident and crime reports; address the public on assigned topics;
- Develop, maintain, and coordinate community crime prevention programs;
- Handle inquiries involving police, fire, and medical emergencies and routine calls for service;
- Make inquiries through federal, state, and local computer information systems;
- Operate computers using word processing, spreadsheets, database, desktop publishing, and other software;
- Compile information, make statistical calculations;
- Prepare reports;
- Perform clerical duties in support of departmental operations;
- Assist with special events, such as parades, fairs, etc.
Employment Standards
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
- Graduation from high school, and;
- Possession of a valid California Driver's License and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.
- Desirable Qualification: Two (2) years of responsible working experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : Willingness and/or ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, holidays and weekends; work on an on-call basis; work irregular duty assignments; operate computers including automated parking citation devices, and mobile digital computer terminals; wear a uniform and safety equipment; work outside in inclement weather; work under undesirable and hazardous conditions; conform to department grooming standards; successfully pass a background investigation; work alone; attend educational sessions as required; travel out of town for one day or more.
