VP, Global Divisional Controller Job at Pfizer
The Vice President Global Divisional Controller will be responsible for working with senior stakeholders across the Finance and Global Business Services Leadership Team (FGBSLT) to focus on controllership integrity, including the accounting and reporting aspects and the increasing requirements and focus in this area. This role will be accountable for ensuring the integrity and accuracy of financial reporting results in compliance with Corporate Policy, US and Local GAAP and statutory requirements in conjunction with the various other stakeholders.
This position will be a key resource to the SVP, Controller and the FGBSLT leadership in handling controllership, financial reporting and accounting issues as well as playing a role to support the many business initiatives we undertake. Among other responsibilities it will directly oversee all global divisional controller activities. As such, this role will contribute to overall strategy and manage complex issues with financial reporting and accounting implications and will ensure that the accounting procedures are robust, as well as drive consistent and effective accounting and control procedures. Moreover, this role provides a strong linkage of all global Finance organizations to enable best practices and a better overall oversight and monitoring process.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Sets the vision, goals and guiding principles for the Divisional Controllers function and has responsibility for ensuring strong controllership is maintained on a global basis.
- Provides updates to the SVP,Controller and other stakeholders as necessary with respect to the status of the activities, key risks, issues, trends and action plans, in additional to proactive strategic direction to respond to changes in our operating environment.
- Provides strategic guidance, mentors, and directs Divisional Controller colleagues and where appropriate, other colleagues performing controllership activities.
- Promotes a strong and practical accounting, risk awareness, compliance and control culture.
- Manages and leads a heavily matrixed global team to ensure optimal business outcomes, talent acquisition and management, continuous improvement and successful delivery of activities.
- Coordinates review and audit activities among Corporate Audit, Financial Controls, and KPMG (external auditors) to ensure a coordinated effort for an efficient outcome for Divisional Controllers.
- Responsible for coordinating the technical accounting and accuracy of financial reporting with the business and enabling functions and with the Technical Accounting, External Reporting and Core Operartions groups of Controllers and initiating improvements to quality and efficiency.
- Proactively provides timely guidance and expertise on accounting issues, guaranteeing compliance with GAAP, Corporate Policies, and local statutory requirements. Serves as a second-line resource (first line is with each of the area Divisional Controllers) for interpretation of US GAAP, Pfizer Accounting Policies and Procedures and other accounting-related questions and acts as a resource to the FGBSLT in this capacity.
- Engagement within Treasury operations to ensure financial processes applicable to financial instruments/derivative are in accordance with US GAAP
- Prepares appropriate memoranda on various accounting and control issues to support internal processes as well as for external audit use.
- Works with Divisional Controllers to resolve issues with the P&L and obtain explanations for balance sheet variances and support investigation into technical issues.
- Works with the Technical Accounting Group to understand completed business development transactions and assists the business in implementing the necessary accounting.
- Works with Divisional Controllers to advise Senior Finance leaders regarding complex financial accounting and reporting issues.
- Performs special analysis of major issues as required and recommend solutions to complex Controllership issues and technical accounting issues coordinating with Technical Accounting
- Review the company’s SEC filings primarily Forms !0-Q and 10-K.
- Signoff on selected management representations regarding external reporting results.
Controls / Compliance
- Partners with Corporate Audit and Finance leaders to drive closure of open audit issues and working proactively to prevent future issues/manage risk, and providing senior leaders with status updates as appropriate.
- Understands Financial Controls role and tracks progress of Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) processes to comply with SOX. Provides oversight to remedy deficiencies found in controllership areas.
- Ensures that the responsibilities of the markets, GBS Financial Services and NYHQ are clearly defined and actions are completed on a timely basis.
Policy/Process
- Provides oversight to various teams to drive process consistency and efficiency.
- Interprets and implements Pfizer Accounting Policies and Procedures and U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles with direction from the Corporate Controller. Drives consistent and effective policies and procedures during monthly/quarterly close process including account reconciliations, account reconciliation audits, Corporate Data Request submissions, representation letters and adjusting entries. Provides guidance to business on new standards.
- Responsible for identifying and implementing control and process improvements, simplification measures and automation opportunities in financial processes in conjunction with other groups (e.g., GBS).
Strategy/Planning
- Proactively identifies new accounting standards applicable to the business, participates in the analysis and develops appropriate implementation strategy for stakeholders.
- Works closely with Corporate Audit and Finance to assess and manage financial risk and when necessary, engages to ensure satisfactory. remediation. To this end, the expectation is that he/she will lead Divisional Controllers in being proactive in assessing control issues and making changes before there are issues.
- Works with business leaders to implement business and financial strategy in alignment with Corporate Policy, US GAAP, and local regulations.
- Ensures sharing of best practices across Finance by working with Divisional Controllers.
- Assists Divisional Controllers and business in providing guidance on initiatives such as restructuring, acquisitions, significant areas of accruals from an accounting perspective and ensures that external earnings measures and management reporting meets US GAAP/SEC requirements.
Leadership/Management
- Leads a global team of Divisional Controllers in a matrixed environment.
- Coaches, mentors and develops key talent within Finance.
- Provides management, oversight and direction for team
- Leads various projects, manages change, and drives improvements in processes and controls.
- Ensures training on general accounting principles and changes in company policies is provided as needed
Other Job Skills
- Significant and substantive technical understanding of accounting areas and knowledgeable enough to engage in discussions of accounting with the ability to implement within the workplace. Areas of understanding should include acquisitions, divestitures, impairments, pensions, restructuring, financial instruments, tax and treasury operations
- Strong project management skills preferred with ability to drive issues to resolution
- Ability to set strategic direction and apply best in class knowledge.
- Significant and substantive technical understanding of US GAAP and of complex accounting areas. Must be knowledgeable enough to engage in discussions of accounting with the ability to implement within the workplace. Areas of understanding should include acquisitions, divestitures, impairments, pensions, restructuring, financial instruments and treasury operations and financial statement reporting requirements and SEC reporting requirements. Must understand how to research accounting issues.
- Strong understanding of key risk areas, including Internal Controls over Financial Reporting (ICOFR).
Required Basic Qualifications
- 20 years of relevant work experience in an accounting/control environment (including at least 5 years in public accounting), including experience with risk identification, measurement and assessment, risk monitoring, reporting and escalation
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited college or university
- CPA or equivalent
- Experience working with shared services organizations, particularly in the accounting and transaction processing areas
- Experience navigating a large, complex organization and managing stakeholder interests
- Experience leading direct and matrixed teams
- Knowledge of risk management, compliance and control frameworks (e.g., COSO) and concepts (e.g., risk and control identification, risk assessments, monitoring and reporting)
Preferred Qualifications
- MBA - 18 years experience required with MBA
- Prior experience in Biopharma - Life Sciences industry

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $232,300.00 to $387,200.00. In addition, this position offers an annual bonus with a target of 30.0% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program. Benefits offered include a retirement savings plan, paid vacation, holiday and personal days, paid caregiver/parental and medical leave, and health benefits to include medical, prescription drug, dental and vision coverage in accordance with the terms and conditions of the applicable plans. Salary range does not apply to the Tampa, FL location.
