Position Description

Maintain mechanical and building equipment and tankage in water treatment plants and pump stations.

Work Location – This position currently works on-site only.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work on and maintain boilers along with pertinent equipment related to them, perform chemical testing and safety checks.
  • Take protective and preventative measures to keep systems and equipment in working order and including but not limited to cleaning, loading of consumables, lubricating, and performing periodic adjustments and manufacturer-recommended calibrations.
  • Maintain and, when necessary, operate valves and actuators, pumps, motors, conveyors, compressors, filter presses, boilers, overhead cranes, hoists, and other equipment used in water treatment plants and pump stations.
  • Read meters and gauges and records results.
  • Maintain chemical feeders and associated equipment.
  • Operate and maintain motorized handling equipment, including forklifts, scissor lifts, overhead cranes, and track-mobiles for movement of materials and chemicals.
  • Clean treatment plant process areas and equipment in an efficient and safe manner, using power washers, floor cleaning equipment, etc. as necessary, and may clean process tanks, wet-wells, clarifiers and similar equipment, using fire hoses when necessary
  • Operate and maintain underground utility infrastructure including valves, manholes, and pipelines. Activities may include hand excavation and unplugging of pipelines.
  • Provide assistance to Machinists and other trades as assigned.
  • Keep records of time and materials. Submit reports on work completed to supervisors.
  • Use computerized maintenance management system for maintaining records of preventative and demand maintenance requests.
  • Work in a team environment with minimum supervision.
Required Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent

1-year certificate or diploma or proof of satisfactory amount of equivalent course work in a program focused in Industrial Electro-Mechanical Technology, Industrial Building Engineering and Maintenance, or a related field.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:
None, if minimum qualifications are met.
Three years of related experience in maintaining water plant systems, mechanical systems, rotating machinery, and/or hydraulics may be substituted for 1-year certificate qualification.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
Required
  • Valid Driver's License at time of Hire
  • Minnesota Boiler License: Special Engineer within 6 months of hire, and must obtain and
maintain a Second Class Engineer, Grade C within 24 months of hire.
  • HAZWOPER Operations Level Certification within 12 months of hire.
  • Class D Minnesota Water Supply System Operator Certificate within 12 months of hire.
  • Associated Boards of Certification (ABC) Plant Maintenance Technologist Class I within 18 months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety rule: lock-out/tag-out, confined space, arc flash, MSDS
on water treatment chemicals.
  • Possess basic mechanical skills:
o Ability to read and understand blueprints and technical drawings.
o Ability to comprehend and apply mechanical data
o Ability to perform mechanical math correctly
o Ability to use and care for power and hand tools appropriately
  • Ability to write legibly and speak clearly in communicating with the public and fellow
City employees.
  • Knowledge of and ability use computers, software, phones and other modern tools
in performing the work.
  • Working knowledge of fire extinguisher usage and types.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize work.
  • Ability to lift and maneuver heavy objects.
  • Ability to pass fit test, and must perform work wearing full face respirator /self contained
breathing apparatus.

Selection Process
The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience and/or an oral examination (100%). It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process.

Background Check
The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position.

Drug and Alcohol Testing
All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position.

Medical Exam
After a conditional job offer, candidates will be required to pass a medical examination which includes a physical screening.

Union Representation

Eligible List Statement
The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire [one] months after it has been established.
