Watershed Inspector Job at City of Peekskill
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, an incumbent of this class is responsible for routine patrol work involving protecting a watershed area, its reservoir(s), shoreline, and tributaries from pollution or contamination. Patrols are conducted by foot, vehicle, or boat, and observations, recordings, and minor tests are made to ensure the watershed's integrity. This position is not charged with any enforcement powers but reports violations to the appropriate authorities, i.e., the Department of Environmental Conservation, Health Department, or local police. Supervision is not an aspect of this position. Patrols protected watershed to monitor and prevent contamination or pollution of the water supply; does related work as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following, Other duties may be assigned.
· Patrols the watershed area, reservoirs, and shoreline by foot, vehicle, or boat, to detect, prevent, remove, and/or monitor sources of pollution or contamination;
· Collects water samples in sterile containers and/or performs simple testing for pH, chlorine and/or ammonia;
· Checks erosion control and runoff to determine the impact on tributaries and/or water supply;
· Checks the impact of local sewerage treatment plant overflows and monitors the effects of same;
· Regulates valves at reservoir(s) to control the water level and flow;
· Treats streams and reservoir(s) with chemicals to maintain proper balance;
· Maintains daily records of power usage, reservoir levels, conditions of watershed area, rainfall amounts, etc.;
· Investigates complaints of pollution and dirty, odorous, or poor-tasting water;
· May be temporarily assigned to assist in any of the varied water treatment or distribution operations.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES:
Working knowledge of thecommon causes of water pollution; ability to be courteous yet firm with the public; ability toswim; ability to understand and carry out simple oral and written directions; ability to work underadverse weather conditions; ability to travel long distances by foot in rugged terrain; ability tomaintain and make simple repairs on mechanical equipment; ability to prepare simple records;good powers of observation; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: (As adopted by the Westchester County Human Resources Department):
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT AT TIME OF APPOINTMENT:
Possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.

The physical requirements of this position require sufficient physical ability to work in a field setting and operate assigned equipment; continuous walking, balancing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting of objects weighing up to 10 lbs. from below waist level to above shoulder level and transporting for distances up to 100 yards, fine finger dexterity to operate tools and controls, firm grasp to lift and carry objects; frequent sitting, standing, reaching, twisting at waist, upward and downward movement and side-to-side turning of neck, lifting of objects weighing 11-25 lbs. from below waist level to above shoulder level and transporting up to 100 yards; occasional climbing, pushing/pulling, lifting of objects weighing from 26-50 lbs. from below waist level to above shoulder level and transporting for distances up to 10 yards; infrequent crawling, lifting of objects weighing from 51-100 lbs. below and at waist level, with assistance, and transporting for distances up to 10 feet with assistance.
